Meet the Interim President and CEO: Richard J. Henley, FACHE, FHFMA
New Milford Hospital Board of Directors named Richard J. Henley as interim President and CEO, effective September 14, 2009. Henley is President and CEO of Healthcare Strategic Solutions, LLC, an advisory firm focused on developing high-performance organizational cultures at health systems and other health-related companies by achieving strategic, leadership, financial and operational excellence. From 2005-2008, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer at Pocono Health System in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, which included Pocono Medical Center, Pocono Healthcare Management, Pocono Healthcare Partners, Pocono Ambulatory Services, and Pocono Health Foundation, and affiliated ambulatory surgery and radiology centers.
Prior to 2005, Henley served with Health Quest and affiliated hospitals for 20 years – most recently as the Executive Vice President. In this position, he served as both the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer for this diversified health care system, which includes Northern Dutchess Hospital, Putnam Hospital Center and Vassar Brothers Medical Center, a long-term care facility, and several other affiliates. Before health system roles with Health Quest, he served as Executive Vice President and Treasurer at Vassar Brothers Medical Center – a founding member of Health Quest. He also served as president and CEO for a captive insurance company, an information technology company, an ambulance service, a home care company and other health-related entities affiliated with Health Quest.
In addition, Henley held several senior financial positions at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, a nationally recognized academic medical center in New York City.
Henley simultaneously earned a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Arts, Summa Cum Laude, from The City College of The City University of New York, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA). He served on the Board of Governors at ACHE, and earned its Distinguished Service Award. He was elected as National Chairman at HFMA, and is the recipient of several HFMA’s awards, including the Founder’s Medal of Honor and National Life Membership.
Henley has held faculty appointments at several health care graduate programs including the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and New York University. He has been active in local community organizations, serving on the American Heart Association board, the Business Advisory Council of the School of Business at the State University of New York at New Paltz, the Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation and the Advisory Board for Hudson United Bank-New York Region. Henley served as chairman of the Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation and as Chairman of the Dutchess-Ulster Region American Heart Walk. He is also the recipient of Modern Healthcare's Up-and-Comer Award.
