Risk Factors: Diabetes
 |
 |
Many people are overwhelmed by the diagnosis of diabetes. At New Milford Hospital, we can help. We've developed special programs that provide support for you and your family. Our team will introduce you to facts that help you better understand this disease as well as important methods for managing it effectively. Anyone with a diagnosis of diabetes, either newly diagnosed or previously diagnosed and needing review, is given individualized instruction in skills for managing diabetes. These lessons include:
- Physiology of diabetes
- Insulin injection or oral medications
- Diet instruction with a registered dietitian
- Home blood glucose monitoring
- Management of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar)
- Management of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
- Exercise
- Foot care
- Sick day guidelines
- Avoidance of diabetes related complications
The time we spend with you depends upon your specific needs. Instruction is taught on a one-to-one basis initially by a certified diabetes educator and a registered dietitian, and continued with a group session. In addition, we may schedule follow-up appointments that will provide you with the best possible program. For more information, please contact our Diabetes Education office at 860-350-7264.
