Breast Care Services
The Regional Cancer Center offers early breast cancer detection education plus our comprehensive program provides for complete breast care services within the facility.
Digital Mammography
Women are increasingly sophisticated about their health, and are taking an active role in decisions about their care. That includes preventive steps to identify breast cancer in its earliest
stages, when chances of long-term survival remain the highest. As part of our commitment to early detection, New Milford Hospital was the first hospital in the area to offer state-of-theart digital mammography. This advanced screening process offers higher-quality images using less radiation, and produces more detailed results in less time. Image quality and resolution
with digital mammography is far superior to conventional mammograms. The Women’s Imaging Center at New Milford Hospital also provides state-of-the-art upright stereotactic machinery using digital technology. And, because the technology is digital, results are made available online to radiologists and your physician optimizing communication of results.
Breast Health Navigator
New Milford Hospital has introduced a Breast Health Navigator who is dedicated specialist committed to helping our hospital prevent, detect and fight breast cancer. She is available to teach breast self-examination, and to identify resources available for all aspects of breast health.
Our Breast Health Navigator ensures that results are quickly communicated to the patient and the physician whenever a question arises from a normal breast cancer screening. She works closely with the patient and family to answer questions, arrange appropriate tests and appointments, and to help your physician coordinate your care. Her purpose is to guide information and coordinate clinical needs, while providing a nurturing and supportive environment.
Our Breast Care Program consists of a specialized team of health care providers focusing on breast health: from screening to detection and optimal treatment. The Breast Care Program provides the foundation to coordinate state-of-the-art treatment including surgery, medication and radiation therapy. We offer many educational resources and can answer any questions you might have about pre- and post-treatment options. We also can provide support for optimizing your physical and emotional health.
Lymphedema
Lymphedema is the collection of protein-rich fluid, which causes swelling of the extremities, trunk, face or abdomen. Lymphedema can occur as a result of breast cancer surgery and/or radiation, which causes an interruption to the lymphatic system. Lymphedema can be prevented with proper education as well as managed with complete decongestive therapy. Therapeutic management of lymphedema commonly includes manual lymph drainage, compression bandaging and garment fitting, an exercise program and extensive patient/family education.
The Regional Cancer Center at New Milford Hospital recognizes the importance of identifying patients at risk for lymphedema as well as the need for early treatment if symptoms are present. The Cancer Center works closely with a team of physical therapists specially trained in treating lymphedema.
