Starting in 2003, the Regional Cancer Center developed a weekly cancer conference. There, our medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, pathologists, nurses and social workers present all new patients, while many follow-up patients are presented and their cases discussed. Their biopsies and X-rays or CAT scans are reviewed on the screen and discussed as well. This team approach ensures that all possible knowledge is brought to bear on each case and facilitates the best cooperation between caregivers for the best possible outcome for each patient.
The Regional Cancer Center registered nurses specialize in oncology nursing. Each RN has completed detailed training in cancer care and chemotherapy administration. More than 50 percent of our RNs maintain a certification from the Oncology Nursing Society and all nurses participate in continuing education programs. This assures that the care delivered is based on the most current practices in oncology nursing.
The medical oncology Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) is a master's prepared registered nurse who works with the medical oncologist to conduct physical exams, review laboratory and diagnostic results, and prescribe medication including chemotherapy.
