Steps to a Healthy Heart

It’s common to think that your fate is sealed if heart disease runs in your family or you have risk factors like diabetes, obesity, or smoking. But you can work toward reducing your risk by trying one of the following heart-healthy tips each day for a month.

Has Your Heart Aged Faster than You Have

Hair color conceals grays. Cosmetics can help cover up wrinkles. But you can’t hide from your heart age—in fact, your ticker could have more years on it than you think, a new report finds.

Health experts calculate heart age by tallying up a person’s risk factors for heart attack, stroke, and similar health problems. The resulting number expresses how many years of strain have been added to the cardiovascular system with habits such as smoking, eating unhealthy foods, and being inactive.

Heart Rhythm

Did you know? There are conditions that can cause the heart to change from its normal pattern. These changes may cause the heart to pump too fast, too slowly, or erratically. When this happens, the heart can’t pump blood effectively to the lungs, brain, and other organs. When organs don’t receive enough blood, they can’t function properly and may shut down or become damaged.
