How Sleep Quality Affects Your Health

Adults typically need at least 7 hours of sleep per night. During this time, your body clears away waste, repairs damaged cells and supports healthy brain functioning. When you don’t get enough sleep, or it’s not restful, your body doesn’t carry out these tasks effectively. Poor-quality sleep raises your risk for health issues, such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Heart issues
  • High blood pressue
  • Obesity
  • Stroke

Sleep medicine at Nuvance Health: Why choose us?

At Nuvance Health, you receive care from experienced board-certified sleep medicine doctors. This level of training enables us successfully treat common and complex sleep problems. You can count on us for leading therapies tailored to your needs. Highlights of our program include:

  • Accurate diagnosis:
Sleep disorder symptoms can sometimes mirror those of other medical conditions. For example, narcolepsy, which is rare, can be mistaken for mental health problems. We pay careful attention during your evaluation, so you receive an accurate diagnosis and appropriate care right from the start.
  • National recognized care:
If you need a sleep study, you can breathe a little easier knowing our sleep centers deliver gold standard care. Our sleep centers are accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. This designation recognizes our commitment to using the latest technologies, research and methods to assess sleep problems.
  • Broad range of therapies:
You have access to a wide variety of services that help you get restful sleep. For insomnia, care may include specialized therapy instead of medications. If you need a breathing machine (CPAP device) for sleep apnea, ongoing support helps you benefit as much as possible.

Sleep disorders we treat

Specialists at Nuvance Health diagnose and treat sleep disorders such as:

  • Circadian rhythm disorders, which happen when you feel tired during the day and awake at night
  • Hypoventilation, which occurs when your breathing becomes shallow while sleeping
  • Insomnia, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Narcolepsy, which causes abnormal daytime drowsiness and sudden sleep attacks
  • Restless legs syndrome, which causes abnormal sensations in the legs, typically in the evening
  • Sleep apnea, which causes frequent pauses in breathing that occur while you’re sleeping
  • Snoring, abnormal sounds that occur while exhaling when the muscles in your airway relax too much while sleeping

  • We treat pediatric sleep disorders, such as:

    • Obstructive sleep apnea
    • Assisted ventilation with CPAP
    • Restless legs syndrome
    • Night terrors
    • Infant apnea
    • Narcolepsy
    • Circadian rhythm disturbances
    • Sleep testing at Nuvance Health
We typically use sleep studies to diagnose problems such as snoring and sleep apnea. A sleep study is an overnight test to assess what happens to your body during sleep. Sleep study options include:
      • In-center studies require an overnight stay in our sleep center. We use sophisticated technology to monitor brain activity, oxygen levels, movement and more. You stay in a private bedroom with a comfortable bed, TV and bathroom.
      • Home sleep studies are for mild disorders and take place in your home using portable monitoring equipment. We provide written instructions and a number to call overnight if you have questions, so you feel confident about home testing. We are currently offering mail-order and curbside pickup of home study units.
        • Sleep disorder treatments

          Sleep disorder treatments include:

          • Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) for sleep apnea: CPAP devices keep your airway open while you sleep. You wear a mask connected to the device, which delivers a steady stream of pressurized air. A CPAP device reduces frequent breathing pauses that disrupt sleep and make your heart work harder than it should. It can take time and a few adjustments to get used to sleeping with a CPAP device. We maintain regular contact with you to troubleshoot problems until you can sleep as comfortably as possible with your CPAP.
          • Bilevel positive airway pressure (BPAP): A BPAP is similar to a CPAP but delivers short bursts of pressurized air instead. The brief pauses make it easier for you to exhale. You may need a BPAP if you have sleep apnea and a medical condition that makes breathing difficult. We often recommend BPAPs for people with ALS, a neuromuscular disorder
