DANBURY, CONNECTICUT — September 13, 2018 — Western Connecticut Health Network (WCHN) has received a transformational leadership gift from Selvyn and Deborah Seidel of Litchfield, Connecticut and New York City to establish The Seidel Family Endowed Chair in Interventional Cardiology, the Network’s first endowed chair in interventional cardiology and the first known of its kind in Connecticut.
The Seidels, who are both attorneys, established the Endowed Chair to honor interventional cardiologist and inaugural recipient Hal S. Wasserman, MD, head of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Danbury Hospital. Board certified in interventional cardiology, cardiovascular disease and internal medicine, Dr. Wasserman develops and manages programs and services needed to deliver exceptional heart care to residents of western Connecticut and nearby New York State.
“This gift honors Dr. Wasserman and his talented interventional cardiology team at WCHN. I have been incredibly impressed with him and his team,” said Mr. Seidel.
The Seidel Family Endowed Chair will advance the Network’s continuing education and clinical research initiatives in cardiology, help maintain and enhance state-of-the-art heart care facilities and technology, and implement innovative programs and services that might not be possible without philanthropic support.
“Through their generous gift and steadfast commitment to WCHN, the Seidels are advancing the scope and caliber of cardiovascular care we can provide to our community for generations to come,” said John M. Murphy, MD, president and CEO of WCHN. “We cannot thank them enough for their generosity and support.”
The Seidels have a long history of philanthropic and volunteer support at WCHN and New Milford Hospital, where they named the Critical Care Room in its new Emergency Department and Mrs. Seidel served as chair of the Hospital’s Foundation Board and a longtime member of its Community Board.
Today, Mrs. Seidel chairs the Boards of the Foundations of WCHN and is an active member of the Strategic Planning Committee of the WCHN Board of Directors. Her volunteer experience at the Network heightens her appreciation of the power of philanthropy to advance health care for the community.
“Time and time again, I see how philanthropic support helps WCHN attract high-caliber staff, catalyze creativity, and expand facilities, programs and services,” said Mrs. Seidel. “This Endowed Chair will help WCHN advance its mission and—through the accomplishments and vision of Dr. Wasserman—spur innovations in cardiovascular care that benefit our community.”
Interventional cardiology treats coronary artery and valvular heart disease using specialized catheter-based techniques that can reduce scarring and pain and requires shorter recovery times than traditional procedures. Learn more about Heart and Vascular Care at Danbury Hospital here.
